Kuhonbutsu Joshinji Temple is a revered Buddhist site, popular with locals and visitors alike.  The huge temple complex dates back to the late 1600s and houses 9 enormous gilded buddhas. One devout artisan dedicated most of his adult life (more than four decades) to create these incredible statues.

The name Kuhonbutsu refers to these 9 buddha statues enshrined at the temple.  The temple grounds is situated in a vast tree-filled garden with meandering pathways.

The Kuhonbutsu Joshinji Temple and the nearby Okusawa Shrine, though one is buddhist and the other is shinto, are tied together through cyclical religious festivals.

The sacredness of these sites, accrued over centuries, imbued our walks with even greater power. Because the temple grounds are in high use for holy events, even during COVID, we were given permission to walk along the promenade leading to the temple’s main central gates.  This 200 meter tree-lined walkway connects the temple to the Konhunbutsu shopping street. It’s well-used by the local community.
