How do we begin again?

Journey Itself Home is a mediative walk through local Setagaya neighborhoods. These sound monuments connects Tohoku, the US, and your local spot, wherever that may be. In our pandemic times, mundane experiences have become extraordinary. Please join us to find peace of mind.

A poetic act of radical caring to mark the 10th anniversary of the 311 Fukushima Disaster.
American artists in collaboration with Japanese artists, developed a virtual process to engage with young adults in Tohoku region when it was not safe to travel. Using a trusted relational network, they recorded stories about safety, strength, and hopes for the future.

Rather than asking survivors to recount the tragedy of ten years ago, young adults were invited on zoom to record their responses to these key questions:

"What’s on your mind right now?”

"What sounds bring you strength?”

“What sounds bring you a sense of safety?”

From these recorded voices, the artists have created sonic haiku that is amplified through a trio of interactive, mobile sound monuments in the shape of tsunami stones from the Tohoku region.  Read the full conversation transcripts.

Tsunami stones stand in silent vigil, warning residents of dangers from previous disasters. Instead, these sound monuments move slowly by foot, meeting people where they are, reminders that ordinary daily life is something to be cherished.
