Okusawa Shrine
Our final neighborhood walk was at the one the area’s most sacred sites: Okusawa Shrine. Tucked away in a green corner of a central business district, this shrine dates back more than 500 years. It is reknowned for supporting healing during epidemics.

The enormous serpent ‘spirit animal’ is newly constructed each year with straw from Fukushima. During the annual festival, townspeople carry the serpent along a route through the neighborhood and around the shrine that has been used for generations. After the festival, the serpent is draped over the tori gates at the shrine’s entrance.
2021 marks the second consecutive year that the shinto festival has not taken place. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted this vital, centuries’ long practice.

We held this walk early, starting at 5:30am-- the shrine is situated at a very busy intersection . Quite a few people took advantage of the morning’s coolness and calm to visit the shrine. We were honored that neighbors and business leaders gave us permission to use the shinto festival route for our Koe No Kinen Hi ‘Voice Monument’ walks.
