2021年7月には、地元地域の皆さんに当プロジェクトの過程について知ってもらうために、私たちの作業場にてオープンハウスを開催しました。

当チームのパートナーである非営利団体、多摩川まちづくりハウスの皆さんのご厚意により、とある一軒の空き家を作業場として無償で使わせていただけることになりました。私たちが住むアパートから徒歩5分の場所にある、このアメリカンスタイルの大きな一軒家は、６ヶ月以上もの間チームの作業の拠り所となりました。それまでは、コロナの心配があるため、狭い場所でチームが集まることはできませんでした。この広い間取りの家をお借りできるようになってから、チーム全体で記念碑のデザイン構想を話し合ったり、実際に組み立て作業を行ったり、プロジェクトパートナー達とミーティングを行うことが可能になりました。

In July, we opened our workspace to share our process with the community.

Through the enormous generosity of Tamagawa Machizukuri House, our community partner, we were gifted the use of an empty house as our workspace.  Only a 5 minute walk from our flat, this large American-style house was an essential anchor for more than 6 months.  Because of COVID-19, it was not safe to meet in close quarters.  We used this space as our working studio to design and build the sound sculptures as well as collaborate with other project consultants.

「まちづくり」とは、比較的最近登場した市民参加型の都市計画の方法を指します。

この家は、今後新たな地域開発の一環として取り壊される３軒のうちの一つです。多摩川まちづくりハウスのメンバーである建築設計事務所コミュニティーハウジングが、この土地に小規模多機能型共同住宅施設の建設を計画しています。解体工事着工まで、空き家のままとはせず、私たちにその場所を提供してくださったのです。

Machizukuri is a relatively new style of community-engaged urban planning.

This house is one of three properties that will soon be demolished to make room for  a new development. One of the members of Machizukuri House, Community Housing, LTD, will be creating a small-scale, mixed-use co-housing complex on this site.  Instead of having these three buildings stand vacant until the demolition, they offered the space to us.

多摩川まちづくりハウスは、近所のパン屋さんの駐車場にてマルシェを毎月開催しています。地域活性のための資金源となるフリーマーケットの他、花屋さん、アクセサリーショップ、パン屋さんなどが出店します。時々、近所の高校生が1970年代のロックの演奏を披露しにやってくることもあります。

解体工事前最後のマルシェでは、「声の記念碑」を公開しました。津波石を型どったコルクボードを作り、春季中のマルシェに置いてもらいました。そのボードに、多摩川街づくりハウスの方がマルシェに訪れる人々に向けて、毎回違う問いかけを掲示しました。問いかけの多くは、「変化への対応」や「長期化するパンデミックにどう対処するか」などに関する内容でした。

Every month Machizukuri House organizes a ‘marche’, a low-key outdoor market in the nearby old bakery’s parking lot.  In addition to a flea market that generates funds for the community’s benefit, other vendors, like florists, jewlers, bakeries, offer goods. Sometimes a neighbor high school student jams on 1970s rock hits.

During the final market prior to the buildings’ demolition, we brought out the Koe No Kinen Hi ‘Voice Monuments’.   We also created a bulletin board in the shape of a tsunami warning stone.  Throughout the spring monthly marches, the community group posted a question on this board for neighbors’ reflections.  Ongoing themes include managing change and ways to cope with the prolonged pandemic.  

不安定で不安なコロナ禍の今、このマルシェ開催は地域で非常に喜ばれました。気軽に人と集まることも、イベント開催もあまりできなくなってしまった今、月一回近所の人と安心して顔を合わせられる場所をマルシェが与えてくれたのです。

During the uncertainty of pandemic, these markets have been especially welcomed.  Spontaneous gatherings have all but disappeared, along with community events.  The monthly marches offered neighbors a place to safely meet one another.
